A stock picker, also referred to as an order picker is a machine that is quite like a forklift. It allows the driver to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain things, and this feature is something the lift truck does not offer. Usually, order pickers are powered by electricity. These equipment are mostly used in a warehouse environment. Most often they are utilized for moving pallets and doing specific tasks in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting which usually sits fairly close to the ground. The operator can direct the machine to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. As soon as the operator has positioned the unit in place the forks can be raised to the required level which makes it convenient for the operator. For example, if the materials needed, are located on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then entire platform is capable of being lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
After the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker can be driven to its next load. With the majority of models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, some companies might have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers may be utilized to complete these specific jobs at some companies instead.
