There are actually a variety of different means which lower or raise lifts on a forklift: rack and pinion lifts, scissor lifts, telescoping lifts, screw lifts and articulated lifts. Scissor lifts utilize crisscrossed folding supports with a screw mechanism used to draw the members together. Rack and pinion lifts use a pinion, which is a small drive gear, to drive a straight-toothed rack to raise the cargo. The telescoping lift system is made with multiple parts which retract and extend into and out of each other to achieve lifting action. Screw lifts utilize threads to raise the lift. Articulated lifts utilize a mechanism that involves many parts which unfold or articulate. An articulated lift example is the "cherry picker."
