History
During the year 1919, Salzgitter Maschinenbau AG was started. The company was founded by an engineer and pioneer in oil drilling and modern drilling technology by Anton Raky. The first company name was Anton Raky, Tiefbohrungen in Salzgitter.
During 1937, the cornerstone for SMAG was laid when the manufacturing facility was purchased by the Salzgitter Group for making drilling machines. In the year 1986, the company bought the grab product division from Peiner AG. Immediately after, Peiner was developed into an international brand name in the following years. Currently, SMAG is the world's market leader, utilizing grabs for global cargo handling applications, agriculture and waste disposal.
