At Hyster, your safety is one of our top concerns. This is why we provide a variety of optional safety devices which could be added to your machinery or work place. Following the standards of OSHA, Hyster manufactures head and work lamps in addition to both visible and audible warning devices.
The only warning device required on the lift truck according to ASME B56.1 and OSHA regulations is the horn on the steering wheel. The horn is standard on all kinds of lift trucks. Even though lift trucks are not required to have both visible or audible warning devices, there are some conditions where optional warning devices may be appropriate. These factors are unique to each and every work site or work place and each case has to be considered individually.
For audible safety devices, which are most frequently motion alarms or back-up alarms, the main point to take into consideration is the level of noise produced by the alarm. To begin with, the audible device should be able to be distinguished from other sounds in the work site and the sound should be loud enough to be heard in the work site, even when other types of machinery could be working. The ability for employees to hear alarms and determine where the sound is originating from could be compromised if workers are wearing hearing protection devices. If the alarms are too disruptive or offensive to workers, nearby houses, or nearby businesses, alarms might need to be disabled. If sound should be disabled, this should be able to happen readily. Regulations must also be followed to ensure that the levels of noise do not exceed OSHA noise limitations.
Visible safety devices might include the common strobe, rotating, or flashing lights. Factors to think about with visible safety devices comprise whether or not these devices might be more suitable compared to audible devices. Driver distraction, workplace lighting and presence of reflective surfaces are all top priorities to consider to make sure that safety devices do not pose a danger to drivers or other employees and are effective. Colour of safety lights should be different from background surfaces and other lights that are within the work site. Safety device placement are very important. Lights must be able to clear any overhead obstacles. Light placement must not cause the lights to shine or reflect into the eyes of the driver, but shielding of the lights must not excessively obstruct the light's visibility to pedestrians.
To meet many application needs, Hyster has a range of optional lights which include halogen lights and weather-resistant LED. These lights can hold up through shock and vibration as well. As for head lamps and work lamps, OSHA has set standards to make working at night or in dark work areas much safer. Directional lighting is required if the truck lighting produces less than 2 lumens per square foot. Hyster has a lot of choices which would truly help increase visibility in low-light situations.
