Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric lift trucks is supplied by large industrial batteries that have to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety measures should always be followed when someone connects the battery to the charger. It is very essential to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be situated close to the charging place. The path to the post should not be blocked and an injured employee should be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Do not permit items like lighters or matches to be utilized while somebody is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging area properly ventilated. The recharging process could cause fumes to be released. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
